What You Don’t See on Sunday…
An honest conversation about the unseen side of ministry life
Sunday morning gives you a glimpse of ministry.
You see the pastor preach.
You see his wife smiling and talking with people.
You see the volunteers serving.
You see the children walking into their classrooms.
You hear the music.
You watch people worship.
You see handshakes, hugs, conversations, and ministry happening all around you.
But there’s another side of ministry you may never see.
The side that happens when Sunday is over.
The conversations carried home.
The phone calls no one knows about.
The criticism that stings more than you expected.
The family trying to navigate sharing their husband and daddy with an entire congregation.
The relationships that become complicated.
The people you love deeply who suddenly leave.
The expectations—spoken and unspoken.
The pressure to respond correctly.
The moments when ministry is incredibly fulfilling.
And the moments when it is incredibly hard.
Recently, on the My Beyond Life podcast, we sat down for an honest Girl Talk conversation about exactly this:
What is ministry life really like behind the scenes?
And perhaps one of the most important things we can say about it is this:
Ministry Can Be Beautiful and Hard at the Same Time
Sometimes we feel pressure to choose one.
Either ministry is an incredible privilege…
or ministry is difficult.
But what if both can be true?
You can deeply love the people God has called you to serve and still be hurt by people.
You can believe wholeheartedly in your husband’s calling and still have moments when the demands of ministry feel heavy.
You can be grateful for your church and still acknowledge that relationships within ministry can sometimes become complicated.
You can experience incredible joy watching God transform someone’s life and, in the very same season, walk through something behind the scenes that brings you to tears.
Acknowledging that ministry can be difficult doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful for the calling.
It means you’re human.
There Are Things People Never See
Most people experience ministry from the outside looking in.
They see Sunday.
The ministry family experiences everything surrounding Sunday too.
They see the preparation.
The prayer.
The late-night phone calls.
The conversations after everyone else has gone home.
The counseling.
The emergencies.
The decisions.
The criticism.
The people who are hurting.
The responsibility of carrying information that can’t be shared.
And sometimes one of the hardest parts isn’t carrying the weight.
It’s not knowing where it’s safe to put it down.
When Everyone Knows You—but Few People Really Know You
This is one of the strange realities of ministry.
You can be surrounded by people constantly…
and still feel lonely.
People know your name.
They know your husband.
They may know your children.
They recognize you when you walk into the room.
But being known by people isn’t necessarily the same thing as being known personally.
Sometimes the ministry wife needs somewhere she can simply be a woman who loves Jesus.
Not the pastor’s wife who has the answer.
Not the leader.
Not the person everyone else comes to.
Just her.
Someone who can say:
“This week was hard.”
Without giving a twenty-minute explanation.
Someone who can ask a question without worrying whether she should already know the answer.
Someone who can admit:
“I don’t know what to do here.”
Someone who can laugh about the absurd things that happen in ministry with another woman who immediately understands why they’re funny.
And someone who can be reminded:
You aren’t the only one.
Ministry Was Never Intended to Replace Your Relationship With Jesus
There is another danger that can quietly creep into ministry life.
We can become so busy serving Jesus that we stop sitting with Jesus.
Bible study becomes sermon preparation.
Prayer becomes praying for everyone else’s needs.
Church becomes work.
Serving becomes responsibility.
And somewhere along the way, our personal walk with the Lord can become intertwined with what we’re doing for Him.
But ministry can never become the source of our identity.
Before you’re a ministry wife…
before you’re a leader…
before you’re a volunteer…
before you’re the person everyone calls…
you’re His.
Jesus told Martha:
“But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part…”
— Luke 10:42 KJV
Martha wasn’t doing something evil.
She was serving.
But Jesus reminded her that there was something more important than serving Him:
being with Him.
That’s a reminder every person serving in ministry needs.
Who Is Pouring Into the People Who Are Always Pouring Out?
We’ve been talking a lot about this lately at Living Beyond.
Who is pouring into you?
Who checks on the woman doing the checking?
Who encourages the encourager?
Who prays for the woman praying for everyone else?
Who gives the leader permission to say:
“I need help too”?
Galatians 6:2 says:
“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”
That verse isn’t only for the people we’re ministering to.
It’s for us too.
Sometimes we bear someone else’s burden.
And sometimes we have to be willing to let someone help carry ours.
Maybe We Need More Tables
The more we’ve talked with ministry wives, the more we’ve realized something:
Maybe women in ministry don’t need another stage.
Maybe they need a table.
A place where nobody has to perform.
A place for honest conversation.
A place for questions.
A place for practical help.
A place for prayer.
A place to laugh.
A place to learn from women who are further down the ministry road.
A place to encourage the woman who’s just beginning hers.
A place where you don’t have to explain every detail before someone says:
“I understand.”
That’s a conversation we’re going to continue having.
But for today, we simply want ministry wives to hear this:
You aren’t the only one.
The things nobody sees?
Other women understand.
The questions you’ve wondered whether you’re allowed to ask?
Other women have asked them too.
The days when ministry feels incredibly fulfilling?
Celebrate them.
And the days when it’s hard?
You don’t have to pretend they’re not.
Keep the Conversation Going
This blog only scratches the surface of the conversation.
That’s why we want to invite you to listen to the full episode of My Beyond Life: “Behind the Scenes of Ministry Life | Girl Talk.”
We talk honestly about the joys, challenges, expectations, relationships, responsibilities, and realities that come with ministry—the things everyone sees on Sunday morning and some of the things they don’t.
If you’re a ministry wife, ministry leader, volunteer, staff member, or someone who loves people who serve in ministry, we think you’ll find something in this conversation for you.
So grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair, and join the conversation.
And ministry wife?
Keep watching.
Because we’ve been making room for you.
October 8, 2026.
